The death of minor versions.

Oh no it's Firefox 242 coming out , but is it compatible with [whatever tool] version 452 ! will it run on my windose 666 and Office 500.

more and more products, I am following are abandoning minor releases.
what is it with the world?
we used to have major releases that really anounced great new features and great advancements in functionalities. Not anymore , revenue streams require everyone to release a major release every 6 months  so that you have to upgrade every 6 months. Just above the free upgrade period and just below a year.

Before that you needed to buy your new software every 3-4 years and do minor updates in the meanwhile, but as the speed of the upgrades and the incompatibilities creep in , we are forced to upgrade.

Yes, absolutely mister customer.
As vendors are more or less getting the upgrade often option in, they say don't buy a product but a solution.
The vendor solution is in fact to transmogrify the product into a solution. Change the hamer in a nail thrusting tool service, which adapts to the newer nails technology. Currently we are in the middle of that process where most vendors are giving year subscriptions with an entrance fee.
We are not yet at the level SAS software has attained with it's business model where the tool is rented, but I think the industry will get there soon. The advantage of the renting is that the vendor always needs to be on his toes to keep up with the world around it. It will be a necessity and not a luxury. the platforms continue to accelerate and if you can't keep up ,your tools will just fail on you.

my 10 Yo tells me programming is from the middle ages.

This morning at the breakfast table we are discussing computer camps. My son tells me that it would be great , you find a game you like and you play all day!
Shocked and in awe , I tell him about how I did a computer camp when I was young where they thaught programming. And I really loved it!
More shock and awe was coming in my direction.

"Yes Daddy , but everything has already been programmed . You use stuff nowadays. Programming was a thing of the middle ages!"

What to do with such statements.

Umbrella apocalypse

umbrella apocalypse is the result of huge rainfall and great winds.
Umbrellas broken thrown away , useless to the modern society.
The more I took pictures of those umbrella's , the more I was imagining that they were not umbrellas but an erzatz for regular people.

People also get through hardship, those who make it through are all around us . Those who don't get thown away on the street . For each umbrella I imagined someone lying there broken and lost.

Maybe it is the cowardice of not wanting to take pictures of people in misery , or maybe the umbrellas make the reality more bearable. which one it is I don't know.

I have edited those pictures from my Ipad and uploaded them using a local wifi, I described in a previous post how I executed my mobile workflow.

Photo workflow on the road

Shooting my umbrella apocalypse pictures in amsterdam , made me wonder if I could publish while on vacation with less computing power than what I have at home.

My hardware for the trip :
- my camera with SD cards
- my ipad
- ipad camera connection kit

And of course wifi at our local appartment.

Step 1 importing the pictures on the ipad with the connection kit.

The foto app starts up and imports all pictures flawelessly.
I could complain about the lack of management of pictures like grouping and no multiple delete, but thar would be being picky.

Step 2 editing in photogene.

Excellent color workflow, great intuitive interface. The export to flickr was not. So save the edits and on we go.

Step 3 using the iphone flickr app on the ipad , imo still the best interface.

Upload , add comments and tags.

Voila its even better than the real thing , when you can do that when enjoying the setting sun.

Code coverage ?

One mutters in a dark corner about code coverage , and I immediately think about the olden days where applications could only follow one path , like the old and Role playing games.

the code coverage analysis seems to me like something local , but which can only cover a very narrow scope in the modern day programming with all the variables. Objects being modified gazillions of aspects at the same time. threads tearing down the variables in your cores. How can the coverage of

Either that or it might be a reflection on how we program and see how we program and remove as much dependencies in our code so that any traced code only has limited variables.
If that were possible then we could prove that each nugget of code is correct and build a solid toolbox of code, but that would be against the nature of reality ?

8 mm Samyang lens.

I have just bought an 8 mm Samyang Fisheye.
The experience has been quite novel for me. what has been shocking is that it is a completely manual lens, which is not a problem but meant that exposure is kind of trial and error. using the inspection of the result afterwards is mandatory if you want palatable and workable in postprocessing.
My experience with the first 20-30 pictures with this lens is quite pleasing and fun.
Since the there is a huge depth of field almost any picture comes out sharp and focussing is almost not needed. I have been using this together with friends and almost every picture has been a big laugh together.

What you must pay attention is the minimal focussing distance of 30 cm which makes it kind of difficult to use in close quarters / like from in a box, see the baby kittens in the box where you can clearly see the focussing distance is really sharp behind the cats.

Look at my published pictures with this lens

Connecting Business Objects in BI 4 to an SAP back-end

I have spent hours looking at the very interesting blogs on what connectivity the new BI4 stack is going to provide. Currently still everything is still under the haze of war while the products are in Ramp Up , nevertheless we can start to form ourself a clear picture of what is coming our way.

In the Current BOXI 3.1 the stack is structured in a way that gives us only a one way to our data.
Report -> Universe with MDX ->(Bex Query) -> (Multi Provider) -> Cubes , with the parts in parenthesis being optional.
It is a stack which can feel limiting when you come from relational databases , but somehow it seems to work when you know how to configure items at each level of the stack. Indeed its complexity comes from the fact that you need every layer of the complete stack to make your reporting project work.
The universe gives us access to predefined filters and a way to catch changes in the underlying regions so as to have stable reports, oh yes and unless you are working with the SAP cube version of efashion turn off database aggregation on measuresNo navigation through MDX , this will only kill your performance and give you wrong results. The Bex queries gives you some configuration on hierarchies and currency conversion and some key figure calculations (Measures backend for us BO guys).
the MultiProvider gives you access to parallel processing control over multiple cubes and setting up alternate hierarchies if necessary .
The Cube being the Lowest Level that can be published and the way your information is structured (being your dimensional model) .

In BI 4 (the new name for BOXI 3.1) the reports can be connected in multiple ways to the SAP.
keeping a BOXI 3 like universe over MDX , creating new BI 4 type universe on the infoproviders (multiprovider / cubes / DSOs) , or BICS access to the BEX queries.
Where this is worrying me, is how each stack will have different behaviours and different feature-sets. Maybe even different syntax for each technical stack.
How do the different stacks handle prompts , hierarchies, calculations , ....
Or maybe  will we have one stack as a solution to a problem?
Currently I don't know and we will see how the future will be.

Blogging with a new app

I have just downloaded a new app to manage my blogs .
- Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone
Location:Belgium

The basic tests seem to work.
I can manage my blogger blogs.
Create new content and publish them from my iPhone.
The app does what it needs to do without being too complex or overboard with unnecessary features.
It works also on the iPad natively , which is a bonus when you have both.

Rope

Rope by GMaerten
Rope, a photo by GMaerten on Flickr.
The wonderfull world of taking macros of everyday objects....

Well Let's start with what I think sony did wrong with the Alfa A330(RANT)

I have been with minolta / sony gear all my life and when I started again with a DSLR I decided to go for Sony.

For most things it is a good camera as an entry level camera. but they removed some things I find unforgivable for a camera! Damn you (I want a new camera already)! I pain myself into thinking that I should be able to take good pictures with the gear I have, but sometimes I feel really limitted.

First thing that really annoys me is that there is no AEL on the A330. why does sony think that the only place you want the regulmate the lighting is where you focus on!

Second thing is no cable remote ! this is horrible, I bought the IR remote and you have to be in front of the camera to trigger it and it only works half of the time. so this makes this camera unusable for long exposures and timelapses and whatever fun things.

Third thing that really bugs me is the magnification factor of the OVF which at 0.75 is so small that trying to focus manually or checking focus accuracy I am always off! with an OVF like that an EVF might even be better.

forth point that really angers me is the noise at 400 ISO which is already too much and too!

fifth point is the absence of program shift which is really a pain when trying to take pictures in a specific mode like compensating the fact that you are in the woods already takes a few keystrokes before I set everything to my liking.

when considering all these factors which are bothering me , I think Sony can count me in on the waiting list for the A77. and Let us hope that camera will be good!
